“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

—John Wooden, 10-time NCAA champion basketball coach

In his senior year, Weissman’s doctors cleared him for a small amount of sports activity. His dream was to play in just one game. In the year’s final contest, Gettysburg coach George Petrie and Washington coach Rob Nugent made it possible. With students chanting his name, Weissman was put into the game for the opening tip-off. He soon headed back to the sidelines. But he felt great. “I finally achieved my goal,” he said. “My day was perfect.”

And the day wasn’t over. With less than a minute to play, Petrie sent him in one more time. Then Nugent signaled his opposing coach. He had an idea. He instructed his players to foul Weissman—very gently. That sent him to the line for two free throws. Here, at last, was his chance to score his first and only points in a college game.

Weismann’s first shot missed. It barely even grazed the rim. “I never heard a place get so quiet so quickly,” said Petrie. But Weissman was absolutely certain about the next shot. “I saw three years of hard work flash before my eyes,” he explained, “and said there’s no way this ball’s not going in.”

Swish.

The shot was chosen as one of ESPN SportsCenter’s “Top 10 Plays” of the day.

The win gave Petrie the record for most coaching victories at Gettysburg. He got the game ball as a symbol of his achievement. But Petrie turned to Weissman right away. “Hey,” he said, “this is yours.”
